Hi everyone!
The topic I have chosen for this simulation is the topic of poverty. I chose this topic because in the last class we had, we did a lot of research and learned a lot about poverty and it really made an impact on me. Growing up in The Bronx in New York City, I was surrounded by people (family and friends) who were affected by poverty. I personally have never experienced poverty, but I have seen the negative affects it has on families and children. I feel that it is very important for people to understand the effects of poverty and to know how it can harm a child’s development and can cause families stress.
My three subtopics were:
- Ways to foster healthy development for children who are in poverty.
- Ways in which high quality early childhood education can benefit children in poverty.
- How strong relationships between teachers and families is important for families going through poverty.
I feel that everyday I am conflicted between sub topic 1 and 2 because I feel both would be great to focus on and learn more about. I also feel that I would find more information on these subtopics. (What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated). As I worked through my chart (Which I am still doing) I realized that I may have some trouble because I tend to over think everything. By doing this I am making my life harder and more stressful. I have not come up with a workable research question yet, but I am trying and doing my best. It kills me ho fast the weeks go by. I feel confident because of the great information that has been provided to me, but at the same time, I am nervous because everything goes so fast and I feel like I am over thinking a bunch. Does anyone else feel this way?
Well if anyone know of some resources for poverty or has a suggestion/ advice on choosing a sub topic, I would greatly appreciate it! I will do my best to share resources that I know of that can help you guys!

Hi Taina – I loved your post and can completely relate! I overthink EVERYTHING 🙂 and the classes go by so fast that by the time you get into a groove, it’s over! It must be a New York thing…I’m from Westchester. I love the idea of researching poverty. There is so much good that can come from working with children and people that are less fortunate. I wish you the best of luck in your venture!

I absolutely understand how you are feeling! I get overwhelmed and over think everything as well. I remember from last class how passionate you were about the topic of poverty! I can see how you can waiver between your 1 and 2. I personally would go with number 2 because hopefully you will find evidence to show how much of a positive impact a high-quality early childhood program has on children living in poverty.

Hi Taina,
Thank you for sharing your info. Mine is going to be on Autism and I narrowed my topic to the three subtopics though I am having trouble like you picking just one as they pretty much all go together. If I was doing my research on poverty out of the three you listed I think I would choose number 1. Ways to foster poverty. There is just so much poverty in the school system especially the way that the economy is now I think that would be the best way to start and see where it takes you from there.

Hi Taina,
I am also struggling with feeling overwhelmed because eight weeks is not a long time. I just finished working on my chart and I really struggled with coming up with a research question. I went back through some of the articles that I felt would help me the most and then tried to decide what answers the articles gave and formed my question backwards. I hope that helps you. I really like your second sub topic the best and I think that it would help early childhood professionals the most. Good luck!!!

Hello Taina,
What a great topic to research! I considered that as being my topic as well, because that topic is also dear to my heart; but, I went with language barrier instead, because of the difficulties I have in communicating with a child in my class. Not only am I experiencing difficulty; but, also two other teachers, one of whom is teaching the sister of my student, and another who also have a Spanish speaking child in her room, unrelated to the other two. I feel that we chose two very good topics that will benefit a heap of others in the near future
